About Us
Cheddar First Preschool is an integral part of Cheddar First School, providing families with a supportive service dedicated to providing high quality care and promoting learning for all children. A team of experienced and well-qualified staff build excellent relationships with our children and their families so we know our children are happy and secure and parents feel confident and reassured. We are proud members of the Wessex Learning Trust, offering a seamless education journey.
Located in the grounds of Cheddar First School, our Preschool provides a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment for all children aged 0-4 years old. Our purpose built building has three different rooms offering environments structured to support age appropriate development: Chicks (0-2 year olds), Fledglings (2-3 year olds) and Earlybirds (3-4 year olds). Our stimulating play based approach permeates inside and outside learning opportunities. Our outside learning environment includes direct access to the forest school, school fields and pond area. All children attending our Preschool have an on-line learning journal where parents are regularly informed about their child’s care, learning and progress. Parents are able to contribute to this profile to build up a full picture of each unique child and their development.
As part of Cheddar First School, we work very closely with the Reception class teachers. This enables the children to become familiar with the adults in school and to ensure a smooth and seamless transition when they begin their Reception year.

We moved our son to Earlybirds for his year before school as we had heard such great things. My son struggled with the transition but Laura (his key-worker) was so patient and kind with both my son and me. One day he just suddenly changed and was running to get there and start his day. The change in him has been amazing and they have really helped to bring him out of his shell. My biggest worry was his speech, he wouldn’t say much at all and we now can’t stop him talking.
I was so nervous sending him back after lock-down due to the last transition but he was so excited to be back. He absolutely loves being there and he has grown again in confidence this last few weeks! We will really miss it once he starts school in September. I couldn’t recommend them enough!

Earlybirds have looked after both my girls since 2016. All staff members are caring, thoughtful and kind. Both my girls were always shy when entering the room each morning but the staff always made them feel safe and secure, everyone was always smiling and welcoming. I didn’t want to leave!
The key workers work so hard in ensuring communication is maintained throughout a child’s time at the Pre-School so that if anything needs discussing I knew straight away.
Our youngest is just finishing her time here and we will be sad to not be returning anymore.
Well done to all the staff that make Earlybirds such a happy place for children to come, learn and play.
