About CFS

Cheddar First School and Preschool is a friendly and inclusive setting where we respect individuality and every child is at the heart.

Cheddar First School takes children aged between four and nine years old. The children are divided into ten classes in this successful village school. We also welcome children from six months to four in our on-site Preschool, and these are divided into three specialised areas: Earlybirds Room (3-4 year olds) and Fledglings (2 year olds) and Chicks (6 months - 2 year olds).

We feel privileged to work with young, enthusiastic learners and want to make their time with us as exciting and productive as possible. Working together with parents, we hope to help all children build upon their individual strengths and develop their personal skills, whatever their starting points. We aim to be a school where people feel welcome and valued and where children can develop the confidence and independence necessary for personal success.

We have a dedicated and enthusiastic team of teaching and non-teaching staff who work with governors and parents to provide all children with a broad, stimulating and relevant education within a calm and purposeful learning environment.

We are fortunate in having a purpose built school with a wide range of facilities, such as a library and Nurture room. We have a wonderful outdoor environment including a ‘Forest school’ area, pond and garden areas as well as a large field. These outdoor spaces are used for a wide variety of learning experiences for all age groups. The playground has a range of equipment to promote positive play and physical and creative challenges for all of the children.

Cheddar First Preschool is located in the school grounds and shares our wealth of facilities. Foundation stage staff work closely with them and other local nurseries to ensure our youngest learners have a smooth transition into school.

Cheddar First School is part of The Wessex Learning Trust. As part of The Trust, schools across The Cheddar Valley can now collaborate closely to extend and enrich the learning experiences and achievements of pupils within our local schools.

Cheddar First School also enjoys links with many other local community groups, who are all helping to enrich the range of activities and experiences the children have here. Children have taken part in community events such as singing at the Cheddar Festive Night, singing for residents at Court House Residential Home, and taking part in services at St Andrew’s Church. Members of the local churches visit regularly to lead assemblies. We also have an active school council who arrange regular tea parties for older members of our community and organise a whole school collection for our local foodbank at Christmas time. Many individuals also support the school with activities such as gardening and sewing and we are very grateful for their support.
